While writing comes naturally for some people, most others have to make a conscious and concentrated effort to get the appropriate words on paper. It is not only words but also the formatting, spelling and grammatical errors that often plague the common student’s essay. There are a number of reasons for this, but it can easily be corrected with a little time and effort. After all, this essay could mean not receiving the acceptance letter you want or a lack of quality. It is important to ensure that everything from a letter to a full blown research paper is correct and reads well because it is a direct reflection of yourself. This article will cover the most common errors of essay writing and a few tips to resolve these problems.

Spelling – not only spelling

Spelling is one of most wonderful inventions ever. It helps everyone, not just students with ensuring the words on their paper are spelled correctly. Over the years we have all learned to spell, but there are specific words that give us problems every time. Many of us have become dependent on computer for alternate words, spelling and catch grammatical errors, but we must also remember that your computer is not 100% error proof. By this point you are fully aware that different words can have different meanings and alternate spellings. Although spelling is a very effective tool which records that it simply does not catch. This does not mean that the spell checker leaves misspelled word, it means that the word you want might not be the word that is included in the paper. For example, words like there and their often mistaken for the phrase. The computer is logical, but is unable to apply common sense to the wording.

Wrong Person

Almost every student has a problem with typing in the wrong perspectives, at some stage. This is a very common problem and can be solved with a little understanding. The two most common perspectives are writing the first and third person. The second person perspective is not normally required for most college, high school or other academic papers, unless otherwise indicated. In most cases, the third person perspective is used when it comes to all and not any specific person. First person refers to the author or individual writing the paper. The first person perspective is often seen in opinion or evaluation papers from the author’s viewpoint.

Fragments and run on sentences

Students generally find themselves either with a long winded sentence or one that is not a complete idea. This is a very common problem among professional writers. Generally, people either have problems with one or the other, but in some cases, both issues are a problem. Spelling will capture fragments and run on sentences for the author to correct before turning the essay in. Run on sentences are easy to spot because they are two independent sentences sandwiched together. They can be addressed by simply adding punctuation, and therefore different phrases. For fragment sentences, it is important to express a free-standing idea in the sentence. Below are examples of both:

RUN ON: Logan loves to color, he is a talented artist. (This would sound better if it was divided in two – it fills two complete thoughts together.)

Fragment: Such as cats, dogs and horses. (This sentence can not stand alone and make sense – what with dogs, cats and horses, what the author means is unclear.)

Not Proofreading

Proof reading is not all fun and no one likes to do it, but it is essential for a well written essay. As we pointed out earlier spell checker does not catch all types of errors that may exist in typical writing. It only takes a few minutes to read over each sentence to ensure that they are complete thoughts, have the correct words and make sense. Correct increases grades by around 10-20 points every time. Most professors and teachers argue that if students would have re-read or secured paper before you turn it in, they would have been a much better high. In many cases, these extra points can mean the difference between passing and not the entire class, or to gain access to a school choice. If it is possible to have a second reading of the paper or documentation for it, and can help, sometimes the author understands the concept, but the reader may not be able to understand.

The best advice in to write a good essay is slowing down and follow the guidelines to ensure a quality paper. All the steps to be followed, or it is likely that the paper will have bugs and will receive a poor quality.
